What is this hunger?

Posted on September 4, 2009 at 5:30am 1 Comment

At DisciplesWorld we are dedicated to the belief that people are hungry to think deeply about faith, reflect broadly in its implications for life, engage in mission and do so in community with others. And so we publish insights, conversations, and stories online and in print that feed this hunger as best we can.

But why are we so hungry?

I invite you to support the Intersection

Posted on September 1, 2009 at 5:22am 2 Comments

Beginning today, you’ll see a small ad over in the right column from DisciplesWorld about making a contribution to support our cause. We hope you’ll consider doing so.

First, about the ads in general. When we launched the Intersection in July, we agreed to run Google ads in order to keep the cost for the site to a minimum.… Continue

At lightning speed

I actually remember when cable television came to my town. I know this dates me, but it’s true. In the mid-80s, I arrived at college with a typewriter in tow. I arrived at seminary with my first personal computer (it was a Mac desktop). Several years later, I dragged my two- month old daughter (now 9) for the first time to a meeting that had been organized entirely by email — no phone calls or paper letters. DisciplesWorld… Continue

Between the Lines

Posted on July 16, 2009 at 7:30pm 1 Comment

Sherri Emmons and I have just started an editor's blog called Between the Lines. Well...Rebecca set it up for us because she's really wonderful at setting up blogs and community sites. And she edits and writes the news as well. We have an incredible staff team at DisciplesWorld. But anyway...

Check out the blog. Comment there or here. DisciplesWorld -- your world, your faith, your life.

It wouldn't hurt to explicity encourage members to post a link to the Intersection on their facebook page and church web sites.

Master's degree is finished. With all my newly reclaimed free time, I joined Master Works - great fun, great choir. We will be performing 2 works by Rutter: Gloria and Mass for Children, the latter with the Terre Haute Children's Choir.

Ivy Tech is now a real Junior College. The recession has "motivated" many college students to enroll at Ivy Tech for their first 2 years. Ivy Tech is $100/credit hour. ISU is $300/credit hour. I assume that IU and Purdue are even higher. As an instructor, it feels like I am teaching a college class. Students have a great work ethic, are attentive, and make the best captive audiences - the humor I inflict upon them probably violates the Geneva Convention. I'm surprised the Red Cross doesn't demand visitation rights. Did I say that I am enjoying the experience?

I hope you and your gang are doing well. If, for some unfathomable reason you need to travel to these parts, please remember to stop by. Peace.

(Since Rebecca is gone...)

Intersection now has 500+ members! When did Intersection start? At some point, it would be interesting to do a geographical analysis of the members - by country and US state.

Received my copy of the latest DisciplesWorld this morning, and read your editorial first, as usual. I think you're onto something. I've experienced the same thing in planning regional assemblies. As one who lamented the failure of 0925 to pass, I genuinely appreciate the perspective you offer.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. (Shameless self-promoting link to CD) I'm starting to get a little self-conscious about having the only song on the home page, but Rebecca and I are getting the wrinkles out of that. You should be able to hear a variety of Disciple musicians on the home page soon.

Verity,

Thank you for the word of encouragement! Where it seems appropriate, I will cross post here.
