New DISCI Post: GLOBE at Night--A project studying effects of light pollution

Hi everyone-- I just posted an invitation to participate in GLOBE at Night (GaN), a scientific project designed to study and reduce light pollution.   GaN is sponsored by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO--Not to be confused with NOAA, the Nat'l Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration like I did in my first blog post).  You've probably seen the satellite photo of the city lights visible from space, but most urban dwellers have never seen a pristine night sky, with the great arc of…See More

When the LORD Fought for Israel: The Day the Sun and the Moon Stood Still: Joshua, Ch 10: Part 2

Part 2Revised Feb. 6, 2011In my previous post I presented the miracle narrative in the Book of Joshua, chapter 10. The city of Gibeon sent a plea for help to Joshua, Moses’ successor, when they came under siege from Jerusalem’s Amorite king, Adoni-zedek, and his coalition of armies. Joshua had established a treaty with Gibeon (9:14) and as commander of the Israelite forces responded by rushing his forces to…See More

What Did Joshua Know About the Sun that Maybe the Others Didn't?

Revised: Feb 6, 2011 I just started reading one of the books I received for Christmas, titled, Chasing the Sun: The Epic Story of the Star That Gives Us Life, by Richard Cohen (Random House, 2010).  As might be expected, early on Cohen deals with the various ancient beliefs about the sun and the solar cycles, and in particular the two annual…See More

David, you ask questions. I like questions! An answer seems to place a boundary on the mind, whereas a question asks the mind to imagine something beyond that limit. Shalom

Thanks David, I am glad that you and others with an interest and some knowledge of the subject have a place to talk and think. I appreciate you starting DISCI. The overall site has a lot of excellent features, and as I get more experience, I hope that I can contribute more. I mentioned just having read Adler's book, "How To Think About God." He comes to the conclusion that God acts as a 'perservative cause' of the universe and this is his reason for accepting beyond a reasonable doubt to affrim the existencence of a "philosophical God." It also enable him logically to posit a philosophical creator God. I know that in 1984 be became Catholic, in the midst of a frieghten illness; and later disavowed Darwin's theoryof the evolution of humankind. He is a very emotional thinker. It is has been a long time since I engaged in any talk or "writing out loud" about these matters. I am looking forward to the whole experience.

Dr. Waggoner! Nice meeting you too. In the past five years or so, the intersection of science and faith, and so that plays out on a congregation/christian education level. So I was excited to see this group formed.

I have a young man (senior in high school) who's considering science as a major. I shared with him about the discoveries in evolutionary microbiology (Francis Collins) and astrophysics (Stephen Hawking), and how that impacts his faith. I think I got him hooked!

Mars Gets Stranger-All the More Reason to Go There Soon-Part 1

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 11:00pm 4 Comments

Mars used to be the friendly little planetary brother next door (Mars is named after a male god of war, after all. How it could be considered a good place for imagination when it was historically worshiped as the war god is one of those paradoxes in history we just have to live with). A hundred years ago, Mars was regarded even by distinguished astronomers, such as…

Rebecca Bowman Woods: Our Featured Member (and the Original Creator of The Intersection!)

Rebecca Bowman Woods was the original creator of The Intersection. As the site goes through the transition to new ownership we thought we should interview Rebecca. We all owe her our thanks and God's blessings for her future at Carthage Christian Church in Greater Cincinnati, for her vision, labor of love, and creating a social networking site for Disciples so we could meet each other, discuss our ideas, and be a place where faith meets life. It was my honor…
