Tuesday's Child: It just makes me happy

One day last week I was making a pastoral call at a local private hospital. I didn't know the patient. I only knew that her name was Elizabeth and that her family had asked the hospital social worker to call a minister to pray with her. I get quite a few of those calls. Elizabeth was comatose, as they almost always are by…See More

Tuesday's Child: Walls of Separation

One day last week someone posted a list of the 27 worst Nativity Sets to their Facebook page. By the time I read the post the number was up to 30+ and climbing. Most of the submissions were truly mind boggling.  One made entirely of Spam comes to mind - not exactly something you could keep in with your other Christmas decorations…See More

Tuesday's Child: Gratitude Month

It's November. In November people's thoughts tend to turn toward gratitude. We are, after all, about to indulge in America's annual Thanksgiving feast. This year I think I will do something really different. I will try to just enjoy the holiday instead of feeling compelled to explain about the genocidal nature of the first such officially declared thanksgiving feast and all the other Grinch-ish info that people don't really want to hear. I suspect that my friends and parishioners will be…See More

Tuesday's Child: A Communication Epiphany

On this day after all hype over changes to Facebook I just want to share a recent insight, even an Aha Moment, about the way we communicate. First, a bit of background. My congregation has produced a newsletter for the last 29 years or so. Every month upcoming events, prayer requests, church board minutes and a column written by the pastor would be carefully compiled, formatted, printed and mailed by the church secretary. During a secretary-free period a couple of years ago I took on the task…See More

Tuesday’s Child: Love is patient

One day last summer I was struck with the notion that I should contact the oncologist who treated me while I was in seminary just to say “Hi” and to let her know how I am doing.  I doubted that she would remember me but in the first line of her response she said, “I remember long dark hair and your patience - quietly reading what I presumed were seminary texts.”   I was gratified to hear that she knew who I was although surprised that what she remembered was my patience.   For the last several…See More

Tuesday's Child: A New Routine, A New Community

Not quite two weeks ago I started a new routine.  Twice a week I drive into Los Angeles, leave my car in a parking structure and go inside the attached building to check in.  After the person at the reception desk verifies my identity and the legitimacy of my presence in the building I take an elevator down to level A.  Then I check in again, this time with the nurses of the radiation oncology department.  Then I wait.  I walk past all the other people in the waiting room, take a seat facing…See More

Tuesday's Child: Using Social Media

I keep seeing all these blog posts and links to news articles telling me how dangerous social media is, especially for pastors and congregations.  I guess I just don't use Facebook and Twitter the right way, because I don't see any real danger in what I'm doing online.  I do play an occasional game but after I had to quit farmville cold turkey a while back I'm careful about the time I spend gaming.  I post very few personal photos and make a point of thinking three times before I hit the send…See More

Tuesday's Child: Ask and it shall be given to you

I know it's nearly Easter, but lately it has seemed a lot like Christmas around here.  Let me give you some examples. Two months ago our congregation met and said that, among other things, we would contact the school district to see if we could be of any help in their tutoring programs.  Two days later the phone rang.  It was the tutoring program for the school district wondering if we had any space they could use after school.  No one had made any phone calls to the school district - this call…See More

Tuesday's Child: Without Counting the Cost

I used this phrase several times in a recent sermon as a partial description of how John the Baptist, Jesus and some of our modern prophets faced life.  The hope was that individuals would hear the call to discipleship and be willing to speak truth to power.  Of course I was careful not to tell them which truth to speak to which power –we all have our own passions when it comes to justice. As I thought about it, though, I realized that this is the way my congregation lives.  I know a lot of…See More

HI! Good to hear from you! You won't see me this year. I've got a four month old, add it to the two and a half year old and it would be a little much. We've only got one parishioner going. Lisa Buday... look for her, although she's the kind of gal you hear before you see:)

I'm excited about this new social network. I was just telling myself, "Self, it would be great if there was a way to make sure my thoughts and passions about church and Christ would be shared where they are appreciated." And the next thing I knew, here I was! Thanks to Rebecca for her creation, and to God for creating such a creative Rebecca.
