THE HIGH COST OF EDUCATION

Are you sick of highly paid teachers? The hefty salaries of teachers are driving up taxes and they only work 9 or10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they really do – babysit! We can get babysitters for a lot less than minimum wage. That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour per student and only for the hours they are actually with students. No pay for any of that silly planning time or for any time they spend before or after school – no students, no…See More

RECLAIMING SCRIPTURE

The scripture was written to and written for and written by ancient people of an ancient culture living in an ancient time. The scripture was written as a metaphorical and narrative and thoughtful record of how they perceived the presence and influence and actions of God in their lives and history, individually and communally. Those ancient people and that ancient culture and that ancient time are gone, never to return. It is impossible for that ancient culture and that ancient time to be…See More

RECLAIMING FORGIVENESS - it's personal

Posted on August 19, 2010 at 9:00am 1 Comment

Some of this story and witness, I have already shared with you.

For the most part, this summer has been joyful. I had the freedom to take time for reading and studying Christian theology and to meditate on and write about my personal theology. Before today (8/19/2010), I had written 6 articles for [D]mergent. Even though I greatly enjoyed writing them, I also knew they were leading to this arti…

Doug,

Thanks for the welcome. I also got the article about the new post, which I'll schedule for later.

I also see by your profile that Rebecca is your pastor. She and I went to LTS together some years back. Tell her I said "hi."

Keep writing.

Best,

Derek

When you say, "any song you want," are you including all musical songs, except "Edelweiss" of course?

Thanks, again, Doug. That's a lot of help, although not exactly welcome news. We've had a special "Broadway Sunday" service for the past few years, and it looks like we'll have to jump through some hoops if we want to continue. I think we'll give it a go with writing the copyright holders for permission to use their songs. We may get lucky. I suppose "Godspell", or at least "Day by Day" from "Godspell" has been exempted; it's in the Chalice Hymnal!

Hi Doug,

A while back, we were discussing copyright and fair use. You mentioned that "Edelweiss" would not be considered exempt from the copyright restrictions in your paper, "Copyright Law and Multimedia Use in the Classroom and Church." Was that example based on another reference? I'm trying to extrapolate that example to determine what would be considered "dramaticomusical
work of a religious nature,"

Thanks!
