Sometimes people ask why a denomination like the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which places no barriers on membership other than confession of faith in Christ, would need a program to encourage openness and welcome to all people.

Our church operates within a culture of fear. Sometimes we do not overcome this cultural context. Rather than preach the Gospel, we compromise our welcome – especially to those who differ from the culture’s dominant group.

The church struggles to live up to the gospel message that God’s love and justice are offered to each and all.

O&A Ministry exists to remind Disciples communities that the good news of God in Christ translates to love and justice toward all people who seek God.

O&A Ministry encourages an expanded vision of ministry by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by helping the church consider issues of justice and inclusiveness arising from the Gospel imperative to love our neighbors as ourselves.

O&A Ministry identifies and celebrates communities of faith where all persons, including the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex community are welcome.

O&A Ministry supports and connects Disciples that take on such a public witness to the Gospel.

I'm glad I saw this thread again.  I googled Chaplain Conner and found this nice write up in the New York Times.  Keep up the great ministry Chaplain Conner!  I'm proud to stand by your side.

Many thanks to GLAD chaplain Audrey Connor for organizing what may be Lynchburg, Virginia's first Service of Solidarity, in honor of the 22nd Annual National Coming Out Day.

The interfaith service at First Christian Church featured clergy and lay leadership of Disciples, UCC, Unitarian-Universalist, United Methodist, Episcopal, and Unity churches, along with the rabbi of our local Jewish congregation. The event was written up beforehand in the New York Times. http://ow.ly/2RnBs

Over 200 were in attendance. Audrey, THANK YOU!
