Fall is coming, which means fall events are coming, too!

College Retreat, October 1 - 3: Hope Hodnett, Vine Street Christian Church, Nashville, will lead this annual event for college students.

Oreon E. Scott Clergy Conference, October 4 - 6: Jack Sullivan and Sekinah Hamlin are the keynoters for this pastors' conference, made possible through a grant from the Oreon E. Scott Foundation.

Christmount Week, October 18 - 23: John and Judy Turner will be the keynoters for our oldest conference!

Bring a group up and visit the mountains this fall. There aren't many weekends available, but weekday nights are great for bringing a small group up and relaxing when the crowds are not so big!

Still space for children on the autism spectrum for camp this summer. Help us spread the word. We now even have a day camp option. And scholarships! But contact us soon, time is upon us!

Camp Lakey Gap has scholarship availability now! If you know a child on the autism spectrum, ages 4 - 17, please let them know about Camp Lakey Gap. Check out the link on our homepage at www.christmount.org!

I am a member of the Christmount Board and serve on the Church & Public Relations Committee and the Program Committee. This is the last day of the spring board meeting. I learned this morning that Christmount is in need (a donation) of a good used van for the house keeping staff to use on the property. If you can help or know someone who might have a van to donate please email me or contact Mike Murphy at Christmount.

Camp Lakey Gap is named for the gap that runs near Christmount and also, Christmount's main creek's name, Lakey Creek. The name is one found all around Christmount. We wanted to have a name that reflected the area (and was easily distinguished from lots of other camp names!).

The new camp has a name! CAMP LAKEY GAP for children with autism! The camp season begins June 13. Applications for campers and staff members (sorry, no volunteers for this one!) are available on line: www.christmount.org, click on Camp Lakey Gap for all the details. Or, you can send the director, Elsa Berndt, a message at elsa.berndt@yahoo.com.

Christmount Begins Camp for Children with Autism

(Black Mountain, NC) The Christmount Board of Directors, at its November 17, 2009, meeting, supported a staff decision to hire a camp director and continue a camp for children with autism previously offered by the Autism Society of North Carolina for the past 12 years. Since the Autism Society decided to end the camp in August, Christmount’s staff has been discussing the possibility of continuing the camp under the auspices of the Conference Center of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Elsa Berndt has accepted the position of Camp Director. A former employee of the Autism Society of NC and director of the Autism Society of NC’s Mountain Adventure Camp held at Christmount, Elsa joined Christmount’s staff on December 1. Under Elsa’s leadership, Mountain Adventure Camp had grown to having as many as seven weeks of camp, serving about 100 residents from North Carolina each summer.

“This is an opportunity for ministry on many levels,” Christmount’s Executive Director, Michael Murphy, said in presenting information to Christmount’s Board. “Not only will we be able to continue to offer this camp to those who have attended in the past, we’ll also be able to include new campers from outside of North Carolina that Mountain Adventure Camp had not been able to reach due to the statewide scope of the Autism Society of North Carolina.”

The new camp will not continue under the name of Mountain Adventure Camp. A new name for the camp will be announced shortly on the Christmount web site, www.christmount.org. 2010 camps will see six weeks of six-day residential camps for children and youth; adults with autism will have camps available in 2011. More information will soon be available on the Christmount web site, www.christmount.org, along with camp registration and staff application forms.

Christmount will continue to sponsor its own camping program separate from the camp for people with autism. This camping program includes two camps for cognitively challenged adults, as well as camps for children and youth.
