Would your hire a Roller Derby Girl to be your Senior Minister?

This news story from a local Louisville, Ky., TV station isn't exactly clear, but the implication is that this woman did not reveal her secret "side job" to the congregation while she was interviewing to be their Senior Minister. Now that she has the job, she's "come clean" and revealed (in dramatic fashion) her other "occupation":

Would you/your church hire someone like this to be your Senior Minister? If not, why not?

And if not, is it possible you're not thinking far enough outside the box?

I loved this story when it first came out.   There is something about the passion and energy that this young woman brings to things that I like.

My response:  Give me a pastor who lives life.  Always. 

Now to my church, probably not.  She does not fit the image that many of our congregants have for what a senior minister should look and sound like.   I have personally known only two of our senior ministers over the almost twenty years of our membership and the two are remarkably alike in many ways, both physically and spiritually.  The pictures of earlier senior ministers tend to support the elements of male, middle-aged, caucasian, and a "preacher" (whatever that means).  

I would love to be totally surprised some day by bold and "outside the box" thinking on our pastoral leadership could be.  We do it with associate pastors and student interns - in fact, a great deal of diversity in gender, physical ability, and other measures of diversity has existed in those positions for many years.

But a senior minister ... well, they just have to look and sound like a senior minister, by gum:).

I could make the exact same observation about every congregation in which I have been a member or worshiped regularly .
